Andrea Bernard

Born in Bolzano (Italy) in 1987, Andrea Bernard won the 9.th European Opera-directing Prize in 2016 and he staged La Traviata at the Festival Verdi in Parma in september 2017, for the Fondazione Haydn di Trento e Bolzano and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. 

In 2017 he staged Carmen, la stella del circo Siviglia in Como for As.Li.Co in cooproduction with the Bregenzer Festspiele. 

In 2018 he staged La Cenerentola of G.Rossini for the Opening Season of Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn in Swiss.

In 2008 he started his collaboration as assistant director with Pier Luigi Pizzi for various opera productions all over the world (Italy, Spain, Kazaksthan, Beijing, Moscow). In 2015 he started to collaborate with Damiano Michieletto as revival director (Viaggio a Reims in Amsterdam, La scala di seta OperaLombardia, Die Zauberflöte in Firenze).

In 2012 he graduated in architecture at the University of Ferrara. In the same year he worked as stage director and stage designer for the theatre productions Midsummer nights dream of W.Shakespeare and Gli innamorati of C.Goldoni.

Due to his knowledge of four languages (Italian, German, English and France) and to his talent he worked as assistant also with Keith Warner in Deutsche Oper Berlin (Nabucco, 2014), Tatjana Gürbacha in Opernhaus Zürich (Die Zauberflöte, 2015), Julia Burbach (The Fairy Queen, Bury court opera 2015). In 2016 he is called as assistant director in ROH in London for the revival of Christof Loy’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

In year 2016 he had his debut as director in the Teatro Stabile di Bolzano with the original production Brattaro mon amour of P.Cagnan.

He took part at the semifinals of the international competition Ring Award 2014 (Der Freischütz) and Ring Award 2017 (Don Pasquale) in Graz/Styria and as finalist at the Opera Oggi competition (OperaLombardia 2016).

In the season 2018/2019 he stage La spada nella roccia of Anastasi for the Teatro Regio di Parma, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Opera Royal of Muscat; Une Carmen, étoile du cirque from G.Bizet for the Opera de Rouen and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. La Traviata of G.Verdi in a new open air production in Como; in the season 2019/2020 La fille du régiment of G.Donizetti and Così fan tutte of W.A.Mozart for the Theatre Biel Solothurn in Swiss, Lucrezia Borgia of G.Donizetti for the Festival Donizetti in Bergamo and Trieste, Don Pasquale of G.Donizetti for the Teatro del Maggio Musicale di Firenze, Matthäus-Passion in Turin, L’Italiana in Algeri in Biel.
